Wayback — a wayland-based X11 environment

This page lists questions that have been frequently asked by users.

Can I run Wayland apps inside Wayback?

No. Wayback only acts as an X11 server drop-in replacement, so running Wayland apps is out of scope.

That being said, there are projects that can let you do that:

Note that these projects are not supported by Wayback developers, so support questions and bug reports for projects should go to their respective community venues instead.

Can I use multiple monitors or manage my monitor with Wayback?

Not yet. It is in the roadmap for the 1.0 release however.

Also see #55 for DPMS support, #8 for multi-monitor support.

Can I use Wayback to run a nested X session inside Wayland?

Yes, but we don’t advocate for that use-case. The only reason we still have this use-case supported is purely to ease development, or to make it easy to test out Wayback for the first time.

If all you want is run a nested X session inside Wayland, you may be better served by xwayland-run.

Do I need a seat manager for Wayback?

Yes. Use either seatd or systemd-logind/elogind.
